Understanding regenerative medicine

Below is an overview of regenerative medicine, including what it is and how it works. This information can be helpful for individuals who are curious about what a general practitioner does.

What is it?

Regenerative medicine is a branch of the medical field that focuses on developing methods to replace, regrow or repair diseased or damaged cells, tissues or organs that have been damaged as a result of disease, trauma or congenital conditions. The goal is to restore, improve or establish function in the designated area of the body. General practitioners who specialize in regenerative medicine spend their days focusing on tissue engineering and molecular biology. In short, regenerative medicine is used to find cures for previously diagnosed, incurable or untreatable injuries and diseases.

How does it work?

There are four different focus areas within regenerative medicine, all of which play a key role. Outlined below is a quick overview of each.

  1. Stimulation of the body's own natural healing through prolotherapy, barbotage injections and dry needling
  2. Transportation of the body's own functional cells, which includes bone grafting and platelet-rich plasma
  3. The introduction of biological adjuncts in order to create a positive healing environment through vitamin supplements and hormone therapy replacement
  4. Placement of undifferentiated cells into the body with stimulation helps to differentiate and works to promote healing

Each person has varying needs, which means the particular approaches during regenerative medicine treatment will vary. However, in general, the four areas of practice listed above are used to determine the appropriate treatment. A consultation will be done in order to identify the patient's goals.

What regenerative medicine can be used for

While regenerative medicine is still relatively new, there is proven research that shows positive results for different conditions.

  • Neuron replacement to address damaged spinal cords, strokes, Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's
  • Insulin production to treat diabetics
  • Insulin production for cartilage repair that has been damaged from arthritis
  • Cure certain types of cancer
  • Address, reverse and cure paralysis
  • Cure HIV and reverse associate symptoms

In theory, regenerative medicine is not limited to any one disease or injury. General practitioners are working to develop practices for just about every existing health condition.
